Twenty-Four

“You okay?” A husky voice pulled Esha out of her reveries as she relived her week-long holiday with Arjun.

“I’m fine. How about you.” Esha smiled shifting a bit in her aisle seat, facing Arjun.

“I’ve never been that much happy ever before. Thanks, Cinderella.” Holding her gaze, Arjun held her hand and pressed a kiss on her fingers. Tingles of desire rushed through Esha’s vein. Blush rose to her cheeks, but Esha couldn’t let this feeling play games with her logical thinking. She dropped her eyelids, trying to curb the flow of emotions from her eyes.

Arjun was recovering well from the trauma he had been through in the recent past. A few more healing sessions and Arjun would be all right, ready to claim back his life.

Would Arjun recognize Esha’s efforts ever? What role would Esha play in Arjun’s new life? A close friend, an old neighbour, his ex’s sister, or a woman who he fell in love with.

“You look tense. Don’t tell me you hate take-offs.” Arjun mocked as Esha secured the seat belt around her torso. The Pan In Goa-Mumbai flight was ready to take off. On Arjun’s insistence, Esha had agreed on staying in Mumbai for a night. After that, she had to join her duty.

“As a passenger, I do hate take-offs.” Esha chuckled, pulling her seat upright for the take-off. By now, Esha knew why Arjun had given preference to commercial flights over private jets, and why he had started travelling economy rather than plush business class. Her neighbourhood boy had changed. Isolation and aloneness had taught Arjun some of the basic rules of life. Instead of splurging money on plush holidays and opulent lifestyle, Arjun was now keen on searching for true happiness. Something which could always be found hidden in the tiny things of life.

Isn’t it said that a common man is happier and more content than a famous business tycoon?

Something which he probably had learned while stranded on an isolated patch of land for months.

How nightmarish it would have been for Arjun when Priya backed off from their relationship, especially at such a fragile moment of his life. At a time when he needed love and support more than anything in the world.

Happiness swelled Esha’s heart as she observed the content look on Arjun’s face. He looked happy and healthy and so much ready to embrace life, Esha felt like dissolving all her apprehensions and worries hovering over her head about their relationship in the dry air of the cabin. For now, she just wanted to enjoy the flight back to Mumbai.

Let time decide the fate of their relationship.

Thinking that, Esha closed her eyes and rested her head against the back of her seat. The plane was airborne and flying at an altitude of 35,000 feet from the sea level. Appetizing smells of snacks and drinks wafted into Esha’s nose and she felt her stomach rumble.

Now when she was travelling as a passenger and not as a flight attendant, she was eager to enjoy her warm airline meal like any first-time traveller would.
